81% Of Businesses In Four Major Economies Say They Won’t Survive In The Low Carbon Economy Without Transformation

A survey was conducted to understand how data supports carbon reduction strategies in businesses of different sizes in the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom and France.

The survey results show that more than 80% of sustainability leaders in these four economies are aware that their businesses need to transform to survive in a low-carbon future.

One of the key findings is that 78% of businesses still use spreadsheets to track emissions, which can be difficult given the increasing disclosure requirements from regulators, investors and consumers. In addition, 47% of respondents said they have difficulty processing emissions data and consider this a major challenge.

The study also found many limitations in the way organizations track their emissions. Specifically, 72% of businesses do not yet track Scope 3 emissions, despite them typically accounting for more than 70% of an organization’s total emissions.

Due to the difficulty of collecting and consolidating emissions data effectively, 61% of sustainability leaders spend at least four hours per week on this task, accounting for more than 10% of their average working time. However, 53% of survey respondents believe that the data they collect is not comprehensive enough to support their emissions reduction strategy.

In addition, the survey found that increasing regulatory requirements are a key driver for organizations to improve their sustainability data management. The most common use of this data in the US, UK, France and Germany is to comply with legal regulations (63%), with the highest rate in the US (73%), followed by France (64%), Germany (63%) and the UK (52%).

The research highlights that regulatory pressures and stakeholder expectations are forcing businesses to improve their sustainability data management practices. Applying technology to this process can help businesses improve management efficiency, thereby supporting their development strategy in a low-carbon economy.

Research Methodology

The survey was conducted in May 2024, collecting opinions from 554 sustainability professionals across a variety of industries including Aviation, Agriculture and Food, Automotive, Construction, Consumer Products and Retail, Energy, Financial Services, Healthcare, Manufacturing, Telecommunications and Utilities. The professionals participating in the survey were from the United States (23%), the United Kingdom (23%), France (27%) and Germany (27%).
